Methodology & regulatory notes

Gross = Basic + DA + HRA + TA + other taxable allowances HRA exemption = least of Actual HRA, Rent − 10% of eligible salary, and 50% of salary in specified FY 2026-27 locations / 40% elsewhere. NPS/UPS employee deduction = 10% × (Basic + DA), unless custom pension is selected. New-regime tax = FY 2026-27 Section 115BAC slabs → 87A rebate up to ₹60,000 at total income ≤ ₹12 lakh, with marginal relief above ₹12 lakh → 4% cess.

Government Employee Salary Calculator — FY 2026-27

This calculator is designed around the Central Government 7th CPC structure. It separates basic pay, dearness allowance, house rent allowance, transport allowance and payroll deductions so that the user can see both gross salary and estimated take-home salary.

7th CPC Pay Matrix

Select a pay level and cell. The calculator maps the selection to the corresponding basic pay and then computes DA and level-based allowances.

HRA tax exemption

For FY 2026-27, the 50% salary ceiling for HRA exemption applies to Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad and Bengaluru. Other locations use 40%. The exemption is the least of actual HRA, rent paid less 10% of eligible salary, and the applicable percentage of salary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does X city HRA mean 50% HRA for tax?
No. 7th CPC HRA city classification and the income-tax HRA exemption location test are separate. The calculator keeps them separate.
What is 87A marginal relief in FY 2026-27?
For eligible resident individuals under the new regime, the calculator applies the statutory marginal-relief mechanism when total income is slightly above ₹12 lakh, subject to the applicable tax computation and the statutory cap on rebate.
Does the new regime allow the same deductions as the old regime?
No. The new regime generally disallows most Chapter VI-A deductions and HRA exemption, while specified employer NPS contributions and certain other items have separate treatment. This calculator therefore uses a deliberately conservative new-regime model.
